The Van

We chose a 2008 Mazda Bongo to be our home and vehicle for the year. Her name is Fritha, after the host of the Airbnb we stayed at in Auckland. More on her later.

Sleeping in a van took some getting used to, but it’s really not that bad. We usually stay overnight in beautiful campsites or parks. There’s technically a toilet in the van, but we never use it. We’re also equipped with a small fridge, sink, and of course a comfy bed.

We cook on a 3-burner gas stove. It gets the job done, usually. I also installed an awning to protect us from the kiwi sun. It’s crazy how much stronger the sun is here!

Many expensive upgrades were required for the van, most importantly the bed. The van came with a disgusting, thin, stained old mattress which we immediately threw out. The new bed is composed of 5 custom cut mattress foam cushions, wrapped in beautiful custom upholstery. Of course, we basically never see this upholstery, as our sheets go on top of it, but it was worth it! I swear!

I could complain some more about the van life, but that’s not what all this is about. I’m thankful that we have a home of our own, despite all the inconveniences. We’re free to enjoy and explore this wonderful country, that’s good enough for me!
